TASK ANALYSIS

We did task analysis with a water-filled backpack tank in order to understand additional shortcomings with the existing design.

 

Market Analysis

A Market Analysis of the available sprayers was done. The products were analysed based on Ease of Carrying & Capacity. 
Based on the gaps in the market, the goal of the product was defined to be Easy to Carry & High Capacity. 

 

As the weight to be lifted was in question, we did further market research on state of the art backpacks to study load distribution. 

We also visited the local REI store to study the various backpacks specializing in providing comfort while allowing to carry heavy weights.

 

Initial Ideation

Based on the inspiration from market research and identified problems, we produced close to 100 thumbnails. 

 

Based on the pros & cons analysis of the three concepts, the final design was developed. The key features from all the three concepts and based on feedback and liking of the client were combined to come to the final design. The model was developed in Solidworks

 

PROTOTYPING

In order to simulate approx. 45lb (weight of a full backpacksprayer used by CDC), we decided to make the prototypes out of MDF. Using the Solidworks model, we sliced the model into 9 sheets. The back and front were produced using 3-axis CNC router, rest of the intermediate sheets were produced using 2-axis machining. 

Accessories such as buckle for strap, back-padding etc. were connected to the assembled backpack tank.
